Benefits: architectural flexibility and engineering collaborations
This project was the first architectural precast dome in the nation, with compound radii molds – 16 pieces of pie (8 load bearing, 8 non-load bearing) opposite pieces had to be erected simultaneously with two cranes, so not to move compression ring. The precast compression ring took two days to set to exact x, y, z coordinates on top of scaffolding. In addition, there was a cast-in-place tension ring, and precast dome pieces were grouted together. Once the scaffolding was removed, the dome deflected 1/8″ per calculations.
