Bor-Son Construction began work late in 2005 on this development, which included renovating the historic Ivy Tower and constructing a 25-story condominium tower and a 19-story Starwood Luxury Collection Hotel.
To best utilize precast as the cladding material, a unique T shaped panel was used, which allowed for a strong vertical look to the façade. In order to use this shape, the horizontal legs (or fingers) of the shapes had to meet at the center point of each window. This required much care and tighter tolerances than what is typically used in this type of precast cladding construction. The result of this unique and thoughtful panelization is a very cost effective system that achieves the desired strong vertical presence complementing the surrounding structures.
A combination of acid etching, sandblasting, and cast-in limestone was used to create the precast texture and finish of the cladding.
The Hotel Ivy is one of only a hand full of hotels in Minnesota that carries a five star rating. The precast elements used are a part of the overall look and presence of the structure.
