Built for better training.
The Thornton Police Station was in need of better training facilities for their officers, which constituted the construction of a new state-of-the-art gun and shooting range for the Thornton Police Department. Situated on a campus designed for police training, the facility is part of a larger training hub, with the police academy located directly across the street to the south.
The project’s design used 63-foot double tees and architectural insulated walls, featuring a gray acid etch finish for a sleek, durable exterior. The insulated walls were incorporated primarily for their soundproofing capabilities due to the building’s proximity to both a busy intersection and a residential area located within 100 yards. The police department prioritized minimizing noise from the shooting range to ensure it did not disrupt nearby homes or businesses, making the acoustic insulation a vital feature of the project.
One of the creative highlights of the project was creating a custom, eye-catching sign for the police station. The station provided images of their police badge, which the Wells BIM team used to design a custom file for the CNC machine. The CNC team then cut the badge into ridged foam, which was transferred to a rubber liner and used to pour the concrete. The result was a unique and striking sign that now stands proudly just outside the entrance, showcasing the station's emblem in a bold and distinctive way.
