Bridging nature and access for all.
To enhance the accessibility of the Lady Moon Meadow Loop Trail within the Roosevelt National Forest, the trail was rebuilt with custom boardwalk pieces to accommodate wheelchair users and reduce environmental impacts on wet meadow areas. The project was made possible through Wildlands Restoration Volunteers, a Colorado-based nonprofit that restores and addresses other conservation needs throughout the state.
Wells designed and manufactured custom prefabricated concrete elements for the boardwalk. Each piece was formed and finished using custom molds. The concrete slabs were also designed with a slight slope for drainage to ensure water does not pool on the surface of the boardwalk. The boardwalk sits atop capped helical piers, all engineered to blend into the natural landscape. Even the concrete used for the boardwalk pieces was carefully colored to mimic the rock in the surrounding areas.
The Lady Moon Boardwalk highlights a unique use of prefabrication—resulting in an accessible, environmentally conscious trail that blends with the organic beauty of the Roosevelt National Forest.
