Designing for Community Needs
Tucked into the mountain backdrop of Frisco, CO, the new Transit Headquarters is far more than a bus garage. Built for the Summit County Transit Authority, the mixed-use space serves as a central hub for the electric bus fleet while also incorporating office space, a community-facing design, and housing for transit workers. The inclusion of 10 one-bedroom apartments not only enhances operations but also strengthens the local community by ensuring workers can live closer to the jobs they serve.
Originally envisioned as a steel structure, Wells partnered with the construction team to shift the design to a more efficient, off-site construction approach, reimagining what the build could achieve. With this approach, Wells helped streamline the construction schedule while meeting the critical fire-rating requirements. The result is a unique space that combines housing, offices, a dispatch center, and a 52-bus bay all under one roof.

Beyond its functionality, the Transit Operations Center is an architecturally striking space that complements the scenic mountain and lake environment. Custom formliner patterns, paired with acid-etch finishes, creates an elevated and inspiring look, not often seen for a transit facility.
The Transit Operations Center demonstrates what is possible when design, engineering, and purpose come together. By offering a complete building system that met fire safety standards, accelerated the timeline, and elevated the architectural vision, it brought to life a one-of-a-kind facility that will keep Summit County moving and thriving for decades to come.
